Why are cats always sleeping?
It is connected with a cat's energy pattern. A cat's hunting style demands the ability to stay very very still during the "waiting to ambush" part, then running full tilt, with potential turns-on-a-dime, for the "ambush" part. Cats need to practice both parts.
So it might look like cats are just lying around. But what they are really doing is practicing looking like they are just lying around; when they are actually fully alert!
Sometimes. Sometimes they are actually sleeping, and sometimes they are actually lying around.
The fact that cats can move so easily between these many different states of awareness leads to a casual observer thinking they are all the same states. But that's not true.
Cats are not lazy. They recognize that their 'waiting" skills are worth polishing; and practice makes perfect.
